Generic Zithromax

Azythromycin

Zithromax is used for the treatment of bacterial infections in various parts of the body, most especially the respiratory tract and the soft tissues of the body, such as the middle ear, tonsilitis and others. Its generic name is Azithromycin, which is part of the class of macrolide antibiotics. These class of antibiotics works against bacteria by the use of a so-called macrolide ring that treats bacterial infection by inhibiting the protein syntheiss of the bacteria strain. Zithromax, being part of the macrolide antibiotics, has a wide spectrum of antimicrobial capabilities, even much better than that of the penicillin. Because of this, it can also be a substitute for penicillin.

Zithromax is either in capsule, tablet or oral suspension form. The oral suspension form of Zithromax will either be in powder or liquid form. It must be taken with an empty stomach, either one hour before a meal or two hours after a meal. Each tablet or capsule must be taken with a full glass of water. On the other hand, the oral suspension form of the drug may be taken with two ounces of water to form a mixture. Adding more water to this mixture will make sure that you will get the entire dose. The medication must be taken throughout the entire length of time as prescribed by the doctor. The drug should not be taken together with antacids that contains chemical contents of magnesium or aluminum such as Maalox, Milk of Magnesia, Rolaids and others.

Zithromax must not be taken with other macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin or clarithromycin. Patients with a history of a kidney and liver disease, the long QT syndrome and a rhythm disorder of the heart, must also immediately tell their doctor before being prescribed with the drug. For the pregnant and mothers who recently gave birth should consult with their doctor before taking the Zithromycin drug. On the other hand, the drug can inhibit the effectivity of birth control pills for those planning not to have a baby just yet.

The most common side effect from the ingestion of the drug is diarrhea, followed by nausea, abdominal pain or vomiting. Statistics reveal that less than 1% of patients who took the drug stopped taking it because of the side effects. Though extremely rare, there have been cases of serious allergic reactions. An allergic reaction with the drug will usually be revealed by the presence of blood in the stool from four to ten days of ingestion of the drug.

Patients taking Zithromax must try to avoid lenghty exposures in the sun. This is because the drug will make the skin more sensitive to ultra violet rays that can make patients more prone to suffer from sunburn. When a patient misses a dose, he should not take an extra medicine or else he may experience a drug overdose. An overdose of the drug will result to the side effects above and patients must seek immediate medical attention.
